The esteemed U.S. weather application, Wx, which Macworld magazine recognized as a Mac Gem, has made its debut on the iPhone platform. Wx provides users with current conditions, forecasts, alerts, and radar data for U.S. locations by leveraging high-quality XML information sourced from the U.S. National Weather Service.
This application caters to two distinct clientele groups: individuals deeply invested in monitoring weather patterns who seek comprehensive data and statistics with minimal distractions, and casual users who desire a speedy, sleek, and practical weather tool that consumes minimal memory and puts negligible strain on CPU/battery resources.
Wx allows users to select their location on an integrated map and utilizes this information to generate personalized forecasts based on the location's latitude and longitude coordinates. Forecasts encompass a concise 7-day summary "point" forecast and an in-depth 7-day “pro” forecast that charts temperature (actual and perceived), dew point, relative humidity, cloud cover, wind speed, wind direction, gust speed, 12-hour probability of precipitation, 6-hour liquid precipitation volume, and 6-hour snow accumulation. These forecasts serve as impeccable resources for planning work commitments, sports activities, hobbies, and outdoor pursuits by relying on forthcoming weather conditions. The precision of the point and pro forecasts is particularly beneficial in coastal and mountainous regions where conventional zone forecasts may fall short.
Moreover, Wx empowers users to access current conditions data from nearby NWS observation stations (with over 1700 sites available across the U.S. and its territories), obtain radar data from neighboring NEXRAD radar facilities, and receive alerts from city- and county-centric warning zones in proximity.
Wx offers functionality for bookmarking and configuring weather maps for swift retrieval. Users can select from a range of default NWS maps and images or input the URL of any preferred map for direct integration within the application. For those with specific weather service preferences, loading favorite maps and images into Wx is a seamless process.
Developed with meticulous care by an experienced software developer with 29 years of expertise – including 15 years dedicated to crafting weather software for OS X and 12 years devoted to iOS app development – Wx boasts multiple layers of redundancy to manage high-demand scenarios during severe weather incidents that may strain NWS servers. Furthermore, it features network settings tailored for both Wi-Fi and cellular operations to allow users to optimize the application’s performance based on their bandwidth requirements.
